 While you might not totally eliminate chocolate, you can cut back on it. Watch your baby’s behavior after sucking your breast milk when you take chocolate and if it disturbs your baby then eliminate it.

  • FISH

While you don’t have to avoid fish totally, you have to be selective of which to eat while nursing.

Some types of fish are heavy in mercury which is not good for the development of your child and mercury can find its way into your milk supply while lactating.

 Just like there were types of fish you couldn’t eat while pregnant, follow the same rule while breastfeeding.

  • Spices (Cinnamon, garlic, curry, chili pepper)

The smell of garlic and other spices listed above can enter into your milk supply and can put off your little one from latching.​

Watch out if you baby occasionally is reluctant to latch especially if you have just taken something with garlic or any of the above spices for it just might be implicated.


Oranges, lemons, limes, grape are in the class of citrus fruits. They are common and are a great source of vitamin C.

While you might think they are healthy for your sucking baby, it is not really good for your baby just yet because the gastrointestinal tract of your little one is still too tender to handle the compounds or raw nutrients in citrus fruits.

This can cause them irritation, spitting up, fussiness. If you need vitamin C then think of mango or pineapple.

  • Peanuts/Groundnuts

This can only come to play in foods to avoid if you have a history of peanut allergy in your family. It will be advisable to stay away from peanuts or groundnuts till you have successfully weaned your child from breast milk.

Other lists of food to avoid are:

  • Strawberries
  • Kiwifruit
  • Fruits with a laxative effect
  • Vegetables like cucumber, broccoli, cauliflower

As important as breastfeeding is to mother and child, for many moms especially new moms, lactation experience has had its toll on them.

Make sure you hold your baby properly to prevent her falling off your hands especially if you sleep off.

  • Don’t worry about your milk not coming in just in time after delivery. Your body could take two to three days to produces the first colostrum so take it easy on yourself if that happens.
  • You should know that a newly born nurses a lot. It is perfectly normal and nothing is wrong with a baby who wants to suck frequently. Don’t forget that breastmilk is the only food they have.
  • Tender or painful nipples can be a problem. But not to worry it could be due to the prolong sucking of your newborn. What you need to do is apply lanolin after every nursing and with time it will heal.
  • Take more liquids. The major constituent of breastmilk is water and in order to produce adequate milk for your baby. Other drinks that are suitable for you and your baby you should take. When taking beverages also look out for how your baby reacts to what you take.
  • You don’t have to always get worried about whether your newborn is getting enough to eat. You will know if he is taking in enough if he is feeding frequently, latching on well, wets six to eight diapers a day and is gaining weight at a consistent rate.
  • When breastfeeding, allow your baby to nurse on a breast for about ten minutes and then you switch him to the other breast to continue till he drops off the breast himself.
  • Some women have inverted nipples and have the fear that breastfeeding will be impossible. Good news is that it is possible. While it might be difficult at first, nipple shields are always available to come to the rescue. Nipple shields are designed to be fitted covers over the nipples which emulate the baby’s sucking reflex and over time the breast will release the inverted nipple.
